Dr. Kirby received his PhD in Molecular Evolutionary Genetics from the University of Maryland at College Park.
In 2001 he decided to leave bench science and pursue his interests in the role of fictional representations in science communication. After postdoctoral re-training in Cornell University's Departments of Science & Technology Studies and Communication he spent a year teaching science communication classes at Duke University before becoming Senior Lecturer in Science Communication at the University of Manchester in the Center for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine in 2004 where he teaches courses on science fiction, science, media and the public, and science communication.
Currently, he is exploring the collaboration between scientists and the entertainment industry in the construction of fictional films and has a forthcoming book from MIT Press on this topic.
